Cannot install debian packages

Hi, I just installed the rpm for debian packages. When I go to use dpkg -i packagnamehere.deb i get the following error:
Quote:
dpkg: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' for reading: No such file or directory
how can I fix this?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

If you want to install something I would suggest using a rpm that is made for your version of SuSe. Even if you could get packagnamehere.deb to install the config files most time will not end up where SuSe expects them.

well it seams that for some programs the only working binaries are the ones from the debian repository. For suse i constantly find myself hunting down rpms. Right now im trying to install gnomad2 from source and it will not compile because it is missing some dependencies which in fact are installed. So i tried the fedora rpm and it installed fine but bugs out very often. On my debian system the program works fine. I dont care if sues cant find the config files. As long as the application runs im happy. Im obviously not going to install KDE from debs. Only things that i cant get from rpms. But now im getting off topic. Is there anyone that knows how to fix this?
