apt-get is the magicaltool for you! If you want to install packages from the net, put this is your /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/pub/debian stable main contrib non-free
and uncoment the others. Run apt-get update - then run deselect. There you will have an overview about every package. You can directly install it from deselect, or make apt-get install [packagename]

assuming you got x working ok.

open xterm and type:

su
apt-get install synaptic

let it finish installing. when it's done - you are still 'su' in this xterm so type:
synaptic

now you've got a really perty gui app to select and install with.
