Install a printer hooked to a router in Solaris Exp

Hi All,

Using SXDE on an AMD x64 w/4GB/500GB/MSI m/b and really the box hardware is not so important since it installed. No sound, though, and it has a RealTek ALC888. Anyway, I have a router w/a print server built in. SXDE recognizes my printer (hooked up via USB) and it will work fine, but I want to hook it up via the router if possible. I looked online and only found instructions on how to hook it up to a Solaris box that's a print server. And being a newbie, the instructions were greek to me. I did see that hooking it up through a Solaris print server would allow Gnome to automatically configure it, but I don't have the extra box, nor the knowledge to configure it yet. So if it's not too much trouble, could someone please tell me how to do this. Or just point me to the web site that I haven't found yet.

One more thing. After installing SXDE, I couldn't log on even though I had created a user account for myself. So I logged on as root, created the account (it wasn't there in the user manager), switched accounts, and then noticed that 1. everything was very slow, and 2. hostname was "unknown" even though I had keyed one in during installation. I'm guessing that not having a proper hostname might affect setting up a network printer. Thanks.

Terry

if your printer is an LPD server look at man lpadmin.
there is an example at the bottom which I used to set
up my lexmark laser printer.
it worked fine.

Well, I don't even know what an LPD server is nor how to find out if my printer is one. I did look at the man page for lpadmin, though it doesn't mean a thing to me. Anyway, it's annoying for Gnome to ask me if I want to Add Printer to Queue.

If it makes any difference, the printer is connected to an SMC router.

Thanks for your input.

Terry
