I don't know what I might have done (perhaps removing one or two too many packages) but after an otherwise successful upgrade my xfce opens in a stupid state. That is, the panel has no start menu button and right-clicking produces no result. Also, the desktop resembles what I had in whatever version of xfce I was using in 13.37. Meanwhile, KDE works fine - mouse works, icons galore, apps start, etc. Any suggestions as to What I can do to repair xfce?

Geoff,

Logout of any DE that you may happen to be logged into, and press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login as your usual self,
then
Now press Ctrl+Alt+F7 (usually is F7) and log back in. Should give you a nice clean start.

NOTE: This will reset your Xfce panels to a default state.

I had a similar problem and if I remember correctly the problem was one of the files in /home/<user>/.cach/session. I renamed the session folder instead of deleting it restarted X and problem was fixed. I never did try to find out what caused the problem.

Turns out to be a 'fat thumbs' issue with the upgrade. I created a shell script using the UPGRADE.TXT suggestion and in the for loop typed the various directory, including something I called 'xfde.' Taking advantage of the automation of the upgrade I walked away and returned assuming all was well. Noticing that the (slack) world was up to ver. 4.10 I was surprised to view the 4.6.2 package still installed. Just finished the correct upgrade and am now fat and happy in a cholesterol-free environment.
