Depends very much on your chipset. But in general you cannot use 'hardware' raid without using a proprietary driver for you chipset (check you drive controllers web page for linux drivers). As far as 'software' raid goes you can use the 'md' driver, and it supposedly works with good results. As I mentioned it depends very much on your chipset, though.
