I just thought I'd post this in case someone else has the same problem and they could watch me work through it.
So, after figuring out how to make slack recognise my hard drive on the Dell Inpiron 1501, I started the install process. Well, it truned out that my install failed with trying to load the "AP" segment of the software (It did get all the way through the "A" segment just fine).
At first I thought I might have a bad disk, so I downloaded a new image and tried it again this morning. Alas, I got the same result.
I've been downloading all my images from the University of Utah, so I wonder if they may have a bad image for install disk #1.
Anyway, I'm going to try and download a new image from somewhere else and see if that works.
Just thought someone might like to know.

Oh, by the way, the error that displays when the install fails is . . .
Hmm, what a bummer, it seems that my problem is not a bad disk (I've tried three now) nor a bad image (I've trie three diferent downloads from two different locations).
It still seems like the Huge Kernals ability to access the HD is a bit fishy. Or maybe its not that. It's more like the whole install process is "buggy" (not saying it's Slackware, it just seems like the Kernal doesn't quite support the hardware that well -- maybe) because if I try different options during the install it will not always crash in the same places -- sometimes even if I've picked the SAME options during an install.

Ah well, still working on it.

Hi,
If you are getting I/O errors then I would suspect a hardware problem. Run diagnostics on your hard drive. Do a memtest on the memory.
Not being at your side to see the results makes it difficult. By your general description it does sound like a hardware problem.
One thing, what did you use to burn the iso image? Just curious! Did you check the md5sum for the downloaded iso?
G'day Bob and all, just a quick comment that I have had the same symptoms today. Slackware V11.0 iso files from plannetmirror burnt to CD's.
I/O errors when package >ap< starts.
Normally I would have re-burnt the CD, possibly even from another site, and try again.
Now I'll sit on it for a few days and see what else I can find out while I watch with interest as you work through it.
