Failed installing nVidia driver, nouveu disabled, no X

I changed my graphics card the other day. I ran the older one with nouveu. It did work, but I figured a nicer card with up to date driver, would suit me better.

lspci says it is a: 0a:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER] (rev a1)

Auitable driver was found at nVidia
Version: 460.84
Release Date: 2021.6.3
Operating System: Linux 64-bit
Language: English (US)
File Size: 169.6 MB

So, I logged out of X and made the script executable, then ran it.

First it failed because it found another driver active, that is, nouveu. No problem. It asked me if I wanted to have it disabled. I did.

Next it started compiling the kernel modules for a while. Then it errored out again. Sad to say, I don't remember the message.

Is there an easy solution to this, or is it easier to just reinstall the OS?

Can't say, since you don't tell us what the message(s) were, or even what version/distro of Linux you're using. Just "Linux 64-bit" doesn't tell us much and without the errors, we can't speculate.

The Nvidia "production branch" 535.146.02 driver is the one for that GPU.

Did you reboot after disabling the nouveau driver?

Installation instructions can be found under the heading, "Additional Information" at the above link. Under that same heading you can find detailed installation instructions by clicking on "README."

Many thanks! nVidias own search function didn't give any useful alternative. Duckduckgo gave me a result from searching for "geforce gtx 1660 super linux drivers".

Not at first. But I did try again after a reboot.

Will read.

Many years ago, I tried the same thing and had no issues, so figured I'd just follow the script. Lesson learned.
