A Successful Install-- Slack 12 on Brand New Sata Box
Hi folks,
I figured I would drop off a success story since most of the forums are "this doesn't work, help me". I just built a brand new machine (my first in 5 years), so this also is confirmation that this particular hardware configuration works fine with slack 12, I was a bit worried about doing an install on a SATA hd from a SATA cdrom since I was unable to do so from the slack 11 disk 1 at all with any kernel.
Intel C2D e8400 Wolfdale (3.0 GHz 45nm)
1333 MHz FSB Gigabyte X38-DS4 Mobo, southbridge is intel ich9, bios is configured for AHCI.
I have Windoze xp pro installed because I like to play video games... when I have time. Which i almost never do anymore.
Anyways: It was a very standard install. I used fdisk to create a 2GB swap and a 10GB linux partition. I installed the default slack 12 kernel with default packages. I did NOT install Lilo, as it has a tendency to fubar the MBR for xp. Instead I created a usb boot stick for slack. I configured my network for DHCP.
Rebooted with the USB stick and slack started right up, kde came up fine, and the network was all up and running. Quick, easy and successful! So good job everyone who contributed to slack 12!
This was a dry run for my "real" install with better partitioning.
I have an equally powerful gaming rig that actually belongs to my brother. He had Vi$ta installed for a while, but after realizing that it sucks (and at one point a virus caused the computer to do strange things) and that there are not that many good games out at the moment, he told me to switch it to Linux. I installed Slackware 12.0, and it seems to work great. When we get a better connection, he'll be able to play Quakewars on it. Most other popular games run through wine quite well, so not too many complaints (mostly he plays Silkroad, Shattered Galaxies, and a few others that run on wine).
The only odd problem was with the JMicron SATA and IDE controller, which is quite finicky and may cause problems, but so far using only SATA II HDD, it works fine.
What problems have you had with 'lilo' being written to the 'MBR'?
Onebuck, no problems per se with using lilo to dual boot xp and slack; I do it all the time at school, but we also uninstall slack all the time, and it seems that whenever we do so xp will no longer boot. Lilo is still there, xp is still there, but somehow the MBR is altered so that xp will not boot.
Ofcourse, we are installing LILO to the MBR to begin with. *cough*
Anyways, I plan on installing lots of flavors of linux on this box, as well as uninstall them. So to keep things simple my plan is to put each distro on its own partition(s) and use a boot disk to access it.

When I was determining my build, I noticed some consistent complaints about that jmicron chipset; I could not find a board that met all my requirements and had solid north and south bridges. I ended up with the ich9r, which has its own problems.
But more importantly, I didn't know that linux was as game friendly as it is. (My first exposure to linux was last September.) I haven't played any games since the semester started, but when I do I like GalCiv2, most of the Total War games, and anything put out by Bioware. And... *shudder* counter strike. I can't stop... after 10 years playing it.
I plan on trying everything I play on slack; I'd love to go 'doze free.

You can always recover the M$ XP using 'fixboot' utility. You can use the recovery method with cd or floppy.
