What kernel/boot/other changes do I need to make to migrate from from RPi0 1.3 ro RPi0 W?

I've been using the RPi0 for about a year now building vertical market embedded systems using slackware, everything has been great, I've had excellent general and xwin performance with my own wm and such. Now I've decided to move to the W, with the assumption that the W is fundamentally the same as ver. 1.3 all should work and I'll now have no need for an external wifi dongle. So far this has not been the case. I created a fresh sdcard with the build I have been using and I can't get the W to boot, all I see id the rainbow pattern and of course no activity light. I then went back to the original install build of 14.2, that was no better. I haven't absolutely counted out bad hardware, but my initial buy was for 10 and they all act the same.

I've done quite a bit of research and found many people/experts talking about needing to get a new Raspian build, but I have yet to find anything describing what it is that is different. I don't have a problem making kernel mods and if necessary I can dig in and probably come up with a solution, but I'm hoping that someone can speed things up by pointing me in the right direction.

Thank you for your consideration,

Larry Hatfield
