xorgsetup not working properly on ASUS M3N78-EM with Geforce 8300 chipset

Hello All,

I have recently installed slackware 13 on my machine. I have a ASUS M3N78-EM motherboard. This comes with a onboard chipset of Geforce 8300 (512M).

I get the slackware installed properly and easily login in command line mode. But when i try to run startx then error is thrown saying "No screens available". And if i try to boot in GUI mode then after booting a blank screen is shown.

Now the problem is Slackware 13.0 dosent come with xorgconfig and on the other hand xorgsetup doesn't detect my graphics card.

Please guide me on how to proceede. Do I need to install the linux driver or is there any other utility.

Please help.

Thanks in Adv..

According to this link, there should be no problem with your setup.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123583
Download and install the latest proprietary nVidia driver (32 bit version if you are running Slackware-13.0 rather than Slackware64) and let the installer write your xorg.conf.
You can always uninstall the driver and build packages for the driver and kernel module using build scripts from slackbuilds.org once you know the correct settings for xorg.conf. This is a nicety that adds the nvidia switch capability and keeps your installed files in slackware packages.

Are you trying to configure a PCIe graphics card or are you using your onboard IGP?

My motherboard is having an onboard Nvidia Geforce 8300 chipset. It is not a PCI graphics card as such.

So is installation of driver a problem?

No.
For further details follow the links given within the link that I originally posted.
This is a link to the English(US) version of the driver.

For an alternative language version, go to www.nvidia.com

I have the same motherboard. I encountered the same problem as you. What happens is xorgsetup, which basically is a wrapper for X -config command, detects an NVidia chip set and configures xorg.conf to use the generic nv drivers. Sadly, the generic nv driver does not support the chip set on the M3N78-EM board.

Anybody using this motherboard is stuck using the proprietary nvidia drivers or vesa. And who wants to use vesa except for troubleshooting purposes?

I'm using the 185.18.31 proprietary drivers. Works fine here.

I wish the generic nv drivers supported this chip set.

I was under the impression that (at least once upon a time) the NVidia developers contributed code to the nv driver but only 2D support. They must no longer being doing that or else the maintainers of the nv code are not adding any such code.

Thanks woodsman and allen. Ya proprietary drivers did solve the issue for me. But just two days before I installed Fedora and, I think, it automatically detected my card.

BTW Thanks for the kind and prompt help. And I think this proprietary driver also installed NVIDIA sound driver on my slackware. And I feel sound here is much better than windows.
