I have the same motherboard. I encountered the same problem as you. What happens is
xorgsetup, which basically is a wrapper for
X -config command, detects an NVidia chip set and configures xorg.conf to use the generic nv drivers. Sadly, the generic nv driver does not support the chip set on the M3N78-EM board.
Anybody using this motherboard is stuck using the proprietary nvidia drivers or vesa. And who wants to use vesa except for troubleshooting purposes?
I'm using the 185.18.31 proprietary drivers. Works fine here.
I wish the generic nv drivers supported this chip set.
I was under the impression that (at least once upon a time) the NVidia developers contributed code to the nv driver but only 2D support. They must no longer being doing that or else the maintainers of the nv code are not adding any such code.
