xmms wont work with artsd running

no i dont have redhat. everything i could find has been about redhat not supporting mp3s. but ive got slackware 8.1. xmms plays everything except mp3s. im sure this is a simple problem, i just dont know what to do. please help, thanks!

i had that with slackware 9
xmms was playining something because the equaliser thing moved about 1/4 the proper speed but no sound

eventually i reinstalled.... sorry i can't be much help but i remember there being a thread about it before....

Does xmms give you any errors? Will it play other file formats (like ogg)?

xmms and artsd
sorry guys, i must have not been thinking when i started this thread. the problem really is that xmms wont play at all. however, i just discovered that when i 'killall artsd' it works fine, but there's no other sound from kde. how can i get xmms and artsd to operate simultaneously.
