I read the following in CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT for 12.1:
Quote:
If you notice Xfce's Terminal and perhaps some other applications being drawn
very slowly in X, then you should try explicitly disabling the Composite
extension in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, or set XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 in your
environment prior to starting X. For more information on this, see: http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2792
and I was wondering how people have been best resolving the problem, either with a setting in xorg.conf or setting XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 or another method?
For an example of simply setting XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1, please refer to the Miscellaneous Fixes section of my HowTo: Upgrade Slackware 12.0 to 12.1. That section goes over this and other things included in the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT.

In fact setting this in the manner you suggested cured the fairly nasty looking problem. An extraordinarily useful post you have there, thanks for making the effort :-)
