Using XFCE on a slow laptop

Hi all,

I've just upgraded my main PC's linux installation to Slackware 10.1. Previously I've used a combination of ROX and Fluxbox for my desktop, which is pretty good, but I've installed XFCE this time around and been very impressed with it. It's got the eye candy without being too bloated, and the additional configuration tools are really nice.

However, while my main PC is an Athlon XP2400+, I also have an old Panasonic laptop - 233MHz Pentium MMX processor, 160Mb RAM. I hope shortly to upgrade the laptop to Slack 10.1 also, and would prefer to have the same desktop on both machines if possible.

So, my question is - does anyone have any experience of running XFCE on a machine as slow as my laptop? Does it run at acceptable speeds, or would I be better off sticking to Fluxbox for the old beast?

Any input gratefully received!

I've got Slackware 10.1 and XFCE on a PI - 133MHz w/ 96MB RAM, and have no problems with speed. There IS a slowdown when I run FireFox, but that's the only app I've seen that with. Not that I use that machine for much BUT web browsing

I have Slackware 10.0 upgraded to current with Swaret running on an IBM 760XL (P1 MMX 133 MHZ 80 M ram) runs damned good for an old machine. I especially like it since upgrading XFCE to most recent. I always used KDE until the newest version of XFCE came out. The lighter window managers always seemed to be missing functiuonality that I wanted, but the new XFCE resolved that without too much bloat.
