I have had good luck with atheros cards in Slackware and FreeBSD.

Alien has build scripts and wireless drivers for standard kernels for both rt2500 and atheros cards. If you are using a standard kernel just install the appropriate package from this site:

http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/

If you are running a custom kernel just use the build scripts and make your own package.
