For the novice Slackware excels as a learning tool.
For the experienced Slacker it is anything and everything you want and/or need, as long as you are willing to make it so.
I wouldn't say it is "mainly used for server apps." Many folks use it mainly as a desktop/internet/workstation OS. It's stability and configurability make it great for many purposes.
The goal of Slackware is to give you a really simple system.
Slackware can do anything, really. On April i'm going to put Slackware on a Raspberry Pi (yeah, it appears to be possible) to make a simple MAME machine.
NB: simple != easy
Thanks for letting me know of the existence of MAME. Now I have something to do with an old PC I have collecting dust. I'll even build a cabinet for it.
I only found it because I remembered that my friend Lufbery had started the thread... LQ's nice Advanced Search did the rest.
Thanks for the link, that's a lot of post and from a quick glance at the poll results, it appears ( as others have said in this thread) most people use it as a desktop OS.
Will read through the posts in that thread sometime soon as I'm in the process of installing Gentoo. And I thought installing Slackware was something.

OT: use an old version of MAME. The new versions are so heavy for an old pc.
I have just started using it as my main Desktop/Laptop environment to do my CS course. In the future it will definitely be a serious consideration for a server platform. Really nice system.
Thanks to all for your response. It would appear that while there are those who use Slackware as a server OS, the majority of people use it as a desktop OS.
In light of this, I'll certainly include it in the 3rd edition of 'The Definitive Guide to Theming GRUB2'.
Again, thanks to all and have a very happy and prosperous New Year.
