Has anyone tried compiling VLC on Slackware 11? I've got no problem with the compilation itself, but whenever I try to run VLC, the GUI doesn't start and the application uses 100% CPU. I tried to compile 0.8.5 and 0.8.6-test1 both with the same result. I did try to install it from a package and then VLC did work, but this was a package for a previous Slackware release and I always prefer to compile this myself (and until now I never had any problems with this). Does somebody know what might cause this problem?
Do you have the wxWidgets package installed as well? I remember when I was attempting to compile VLC with the VUI and I needed to have this library installed. I don't know if this may be the cause of your problem with cpu usage, but perhaps it is worth a try.

I never succeeded compiling vlc and wxWidgets. vlc played media, but always claimed that wxWidgets was missing. May be my fault though ... I didn't check it lately, but AFAIK the next (major?) vlc release should be based on the QT toolkit for GUI. I guess this will be much easier to compile. I will stick with packages from linuxpackages.net as long as wxWidgets is required, vlc and dependencies are enough to drive me mad.
Just to let you know that there is a package at linuxpackages for vlc 0.8.5 that was built for 10.2, but also works in 11. In fact, I just installed this package last night and it works w/o any sort of problems, at least from what I can tell, in Slackware 11. And, it works initially w/o the need for other dependencies and wxWidgets. Unless you are entirely devoted to compiling from source, this may be the less involved method. I don't know the exact package name, but again it is for vlc 0.8.5.

Yeah, I also found this package, and so far it's working great. I'll probably stick with that package unless I can find out why my own build doesn't want to start
i have major trouble to get VLC running under slackware v11, using two Logitech webcams: messenger and ultra vision. which cameras are you using? see my thread in LinuxQuestions from yesterday:
i think it's either a problem with VLC v0.8.6, or with my setup using my own kernels on three different dual-xeon workstations that is missing something.
