valgrind crashes at start up with "Killed" error message

Hi all. I've tried installing valgrind both by compiling from source and a Slackware package (from linuxpackages.net), and I have the same problem. When I start valgrind, it prints "Killed" and quits. This happens no matter what parameters I pass to it ("--help", "--version", or a program), so it appears that it's a problem that happens pretty quickly within valgrind (i.e. before it actually starts doing any memory checking or whatever). I also had problems with valgrind 2.4 (I'm currently using to use 3.3.1), which had a more verbose but equally cryptic error message. Any ideas?
