updating kernel source

i want to upgrade my kernel from 2.4.20 to 2.4.21, so i downloaded 2.4.21 patch. i bunzipped it and it gave me just one file that linux recognizes as a kernel source patch. what do i do with it now? all of the tuturials for updating my kernel say that once i bunzip or tar it i should see linux folders pop up in my /usr/src directory. since this is just a small update do i need to have the 2.4.20 source already installed (which the slackware installation didn't do for me for some reason, despite the full install) to patch it? i'd appreciate any help

To patch the kernel you would need to have all the kernel things.
Like the headers and all that. Then once you tar the file, and
move it to /usr/src/linux (which you should create after having
installed the headers) and enter "patch -p1
<nameofpatchfile.here". And that will update/patch your old
kernel to the new one, after that, you will need to recompile the
kernel.

ok i downloaded the source .tar and unpacked it. in the output it predictably said that it was unpacking things into the /usr/src directory. when i go there i don't see anything new. what the hell? the only folders i see are
Code:
thrice@Home:~$ su
Password:
root@Home:/home/thrice# ls /usr/src
nvidia rpm
any idea why?
