Unable to get wireless working on Dell Inspiron 1501

I have a new installation of slackware64 13 on a Dell inspiron I cannot get wireless working. Previously on 12.0 I did have it working with ndiswrpper but I thought I would get it working with the broadcom drivers.

This is what I have

If you can't get it working with the b43 module which seems to be functional with try the b44.

Have you tried to associate with your router yet? What are you using to manage your wifi security?

You need to try sudo ifconfig wlan0 down and then sudo rmmod b43 then sudo ifconfig wlan0 up.

How would I do that?

I don't think there is anything there to associate with my router.

Ok you have serious problems then, the output of your lsmod shows b44 module is loaded and the b43 module also....this is not right. Also the output of your ifconfig clearly shows wlan0.

Those commands need root privileges, that's why I put sudo in front of them.

I think b44 is for the ethernet card

I have been doing all this after su to root

I have now tried ndiswrapper and still no joy. I am getting 'wlan0 not found'

Thanks for all that but I have got it working.

I installed b43-fwcutter and the firmware driver from slackbuilds, ran fwcutter and rebooted.

The wireless came up as eth1

It could be helpful to others if you posted how you came to that conclusion.

Indeed, I'm having a similar problem. I have a Broadcom 4311 Wireless card, on a Dell Inspiron 1525, and I know that it should appear as eth1 (as it is working on my Ubuntu), but only lo and eth0 when I use ifconfig -a.
I'm new to Slackware and still can't figure quite how to use drivers and modules... Where should I look?

Do you have wireless working at all in Slackware?

Do you have b43-fwcutter and the firmware installed?

Hey guys, the kernel module for wireless card should be b43. b44 is the module for *wired* card.... I use DELL 1501 too After installed b43 firmware stuff from SBo ( http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=b43&sv=13.0 ), I use the card for years without problem.... BTW, I have no idea why your wireless interface is eth0. It will be wlan0 here all the time... (I use wicd to configure the network )

A summary of today's odyssey

A new installation of slackware 64 13 on our laptop. Wireless did not appear to be working.

Actually the LED for wireless was off and I have not yet discovered how to control it on linux but a quick boot into windows and it was on again.

I installed broadcom-sta from slackbuilds but that did not seem to help (possibly made things worse)

ifwconfig showed that wireless was associated with eth1 but

iwconfig eth1 essid ******
iwconfig eth1 key restricted *****
iwconfig eth1 mode managed
ifconfig eth1 up

did not seem to get me anywhere. I had a look in dmesg and noticed an message about absent b43 drivers so I installed b43-fwcutter and b43-firmware from slackbuilds. Then

b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ b43-fwcutter/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o

reboot and I after the sequence of iwconfig and dhcpcd I did have wireless working.

The next problem was inconsistent naming of the wireless interface. I might have this sorted out - see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...14#post3798914

No. I know my wireless card should show as eth1 (eth0 is wired), but it doesn't when I use ifconfig or iwconfig.
If I use lspci, it shows up.

I was looking on my Ubuntu, it seems that it uses the broadcom-sta driver you mentioned. I'll try to install from slackbuilds and see if it works...
