Yes, startx is working for me. I spent the day reading /var/log/xorg and found:

(WW) R128(0): Can't determine panel dimensions, and none specified.
Disabling programming of FP registers.

(EE) AIGLX: DRI module not loaded, I will see what else I find before I edit the Xorgconfig file. Are you going to recompile your kernel?

But if X starts, what's exactly the problem?
You could try the other driver on CD3, it's in /extra.
Just open konsole, log in as root, type installpkg<Space> and drag'n drop the xf86-video-ati-6.6.3-i486-3.tgz in konsole.
Enter.

The problem is there are errors and i am running a pretty nice 1600x1200 Sxga+ and its really important the video card is running properly. The other things I installed slackware to learn to use the command line to just to have another desktop. Thanks for the install command.

Have you read the Slackbook?
I suggest you do that, it provides many answers for lots of problems.
