Two questions on Xfce

Hi,

Lately I'm using Xfce more and more, I find the latest Xfce that comes with SW12 a big step forward and I like it.
There are however a few questions that I can't seem to solve myself:
1. I like to click once -like KDE- on a Desktop icon to start the application. Is it possible to get that?
2. Alt+Ctrl+Del starts the screensaver. I'd like to shutdown with that. Which also raises another related question: how do you -if possible- configure shortcuts?
In KDE I press Alt+F to start Firefox (just an example). I'd like that in Xfce. Can it be done?

Try this link:

XFCE customization

There are two places to customize shortcuts, they are both in the settings menu.

1) Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts
- This is where you can have shortcuts for custom applications.
2) Settings > Window Manger > Keyboard
- This is keyboard shortcuts for the window manager. So to resize, minimize, shade, maximize etc...
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies!
Worked it out, except for one thing: single click on a Desktop-item.
Any way to achieve that?

I don't know, but I would assume that's part of the desktop settings, maybe? I haven't used XFCE beyond checking it out, so I can only guess.

Thanks, I've been Google'ing a lot about this issue, but can't seem to find a solution. It's marked as a bug, so I guess it's just not possible at the moment.

It seems likely that they've not implemented single-click on the desktop. Heck, you can't click and drag over an area to select multiple icons on the desktop either, or turn off snap-to-grid behavior. It's still a little primitive, XFCE desktop icons. And because of it, I turn it off entirely and just set up one of the panels with every app shortcut I think I'll need, including a link to Thunar if need to access files in a graphical way.

I, too, am pretty darned impressed with this release of XFCE. I've tried most every DE and WM out there and keep coming back to XFCE.

Yeah there is an option in the file manager settings for single click but it doesn't effect the desktop icons.

The Xfce 4.6 release (which is still in development and not slated for release any time soon) will use Thunar to manage the desktop, so look for the single click functionality when it releases. Until then, it's not going to happen.

adriv 09-11-2007 09:10 AM

I'm aware of the single-click functionality in Thunar. But as stated, that doesn't include the desktop icons.
I don't use Thunar -as filemanager- much, I prefer XFE (a lot faster).
We'll have to wait for the next release then.
Thanks everybody for the input.

Is ATI AGP X2 supported in the slackware12 Xfce? What is the command to find out the Xfce version? I am having trouble setting Xfce up and posted errors but no one has responded.
How do u set user permissions in Xfce? I have broken lib and don't know how to add applications and alike. Have read alot but don't understand what commands to use.

Just check the Xfce-menu --> About Xfce (it's 4.4.1 ;) )

Grafical? The same as in KDE: rightclick a dir --> Properties --> Permissions. In commandline the same as always (chmod/chown).

First thing to do is fix the lib matter (if possible...).

Thanks adriv, sorry to ask questions in your thread but
you were getting answers.lol I never used KDE. As for ATI AGP x2 video card is a legacy card. I read somewhere that u couldn't use it at the time w/XFCE4 and 2.6kernels apparently drivers have been written to include it now:)
The permissions answer ought to help w/error messages and since I posted have reinstalled, lol
My thread is 'Xfce error messages', I'm still a newbie. Thanks much

adriv 09-14-2007 05:52 AM

I don't know anything about ATi-drivers (always use NVidia), but I guess -after reading your topic- you installed the driver.
Do you still get these errors then?

NightSky 09-14-2007 01:43 PM

adriv, I haven't installed the actual driver myself, just did the xorgconfig...there is a version of r128 on CD3 but I don't know how to install drivers, software in linux, and not sure if its the same ver as the on on oxorg.com,if it is no reason to try downloading on top of everything else. Tried compiling a kernel once or twice and wound up unable to boot.. left it that way u don't want to know how long. lol

I do read my books (outdated by now) then navigate around, open files in vi but always afraid to trash the system. I edited xorgconfig file and crashed w/no xfce, When I tried to reinstall lost my partitions. 48hrs later I am backup. I received some gd advice for creating an easier to maintain setup in case I trash something. I need to learn how to execute commands that do stuff and to understand what I read in files ie.
fi.. Sometimes I think all I have to do is uncomment stuff. It all seems like programing language like short hand lol Its all very time consuming, i could spend my whole life breaking and reinstalling. lol Still getting same errors. Think its a combination of permissions and something I have to udev whatever that means.

The ranish partition manager and Gparted. Also I setup my partitions to isolate my trial and error. Have to build up my command line skills. Been printing stuff Guides and such.
