trouble installing evolution

I've got all the latest dependencies, but evolution wants a newer version of gal than I can find!

evolution: error while loading shared libraries: libgal-2.0.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I installed version 1.99.7 from linuxpackages.net and I cannot find a newer one. Help!

libgal-2.0

Hi,
I do not have slackware or evolution, but I hope to be using both soon, so I am interested in your problem.
After looking at the linuxpackages.net site, I believe you are correct that you have the latest gal2 package.
Would it be possible to use the find command to locate the newest version of libgal-x-x on your system ( or maybe you know which directory it is in ) , and then make a soft link ( naming it libgal-2.0.so.2 ) which points to that version?
You might want to give this some thought first.

I am anxious to see how a real slacker solves this problem.
And yes, I know why so many have suggested that I go back to Windows

Evolution in Slackware

I found the best way to keep Gnome packages up to date was to use dropline-installer. It keeps your Gnome Desktop up to date with the latest software, and by doing this also updates other things such as XFree86. You can download the dropline-installer as a .tgz package and use pkgtool to install it. Then run dropline-installer and you will get an ncurses screen very similar to pkgtool. I am quite happy to use ./configure; make; make install with most source packages, but dropline is a great way to take care of the dependencies in Gnome and XFree86 and to make sure everything is installed in the right order. It will also remove your outdated packages for you. The latest releases from dropline include Evolution 1.4 in all its GTK2 glory. Once you've installed dropline, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

dropline looks great, but it still only upgrades gal to 1.99.7.

Alright, dropline-installer is completely useless. It won't do a fresh install or upgrade or remove, I've tried uninstalling the package and reinstalling and I can't get it to work. It was working initially, but it kept freezing when installing packages. What do I do?
