Question texconfig and user rights

Well, it hasn't changed since I use Slackware (which is 9.0): the tetex configuration script "texconfig" does not run as root, but only as a user. However, many operations of this script fail because of a lack of write rights. In my last installation I just did a chmod to make the whole texmf tree writable to anyone to adjust my settings and add more tex packages, but that is a work around, not a solution.

So, I would like to know whether I got something completely wrong on how tetex should be configured in Slackware, or why the texconfig script behaves in the manner described, and how the solution should like, by either changing something on either my computer or brain software.

Thanks & Regards
:-J

P.S.: And thanks to the new 10.1.0 release! works & looks great on HP Omnibook 6000!
