Switch desktop to KDE

Hi,

When I installed Slackware 12.0 the first time, I decided to try the XFCE desktop. But, VirtualBox doesn't seem to fit correctly on the screen. So, I just decided to do a re-install and this time to choose the KDE desktop. After the re-install, root has KDE, but user still has XFCE. Is there some way to just switch user's desktop to KDE. I already tried the "switchdesktop" command, but terminal informs me the the command is not found.

Btw, /home is on it's own partition and I've been reusing it.

Thanks,
-Joe G

There should be a really simple way to fix your problem.

a) the easiest: when you boot up your computer, at the login screen there should be a box called "sessions" or similar and in there you should be able to choose between all the desktop environments you have installed like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, fluxbox, enlightenment and much much more!. Within this there should be something like "make this default" which means it will be the one used when you type your username and password in. Too easy eh?

b) If the easiest prooves too difficult, you may be using xdm (x display manager) and you may want to use gdm or kdm (gnome and kde display manager) to login with. If you install one of these (with debian based distros you type 'apt-get install gdm' or kdm ) it will take priority over the old one, you are currently using and then you will DEFINITELY be able to select 'sessions' and choose gnome, KDE or xfce and then it will ask 'do you want to make this your default' and you can say 'yes' and every time you login you will log into KDE.

hope this helps!

Hi Chronographer!

When you start Slackware, you login from the CL. (I know what you mean about the various menus that other distros use.) The desktop is started by the "startx" command after logging in. Startx starts the default desktop for that user. Since I'm reusing /home, and since I have kde installed (root uses it), I was wondering if there might just be something in /home... maybe a /.directory I need to alter.

Thanks,
-Joe

This is simply the default. If you wish, you can login graphically by either changing to runlevel 4 manually (`telinit 4` as root) or by changing the default runlevel to 4 in /etc/inittab.
