You'll need to install GStreamer (along with plugins) and then recompile Pidgin with support for GStreamer (which means passing "--enable-gstreamer" to the configure script). The simplest thing to do after you've installed GStreamer (either from source or if you can find packages for it somewhere) is to get the Pidgin source and Pat's SlackBuild script (both are available on any mirror), modify it so "--disable-gstreamer" becomes "--enable-gstreamer" in the arguments to configure and then run the script to create the package. You'll then be able to install that package with pkgtool or installpkg. This procedure is what I do!
Bring up Pidgin. Goto Tools/Preferences/Sounds.
Change Method to Command and Sound command to aplay %s.
Assuming you setup alsa correctly, Pidgin should now have sound.
warun, although Nylex's method of installing gstreamer and recompiling Pidgin is valid, you don't need to do all of that just for sounds. MagicMan's suggestion is much easier and it works. I personally use `artsplay %s` instead of `aplay %s`, but they should both work.
