SoundBlaster Live! 24 bit 7.1

I was getting ready to buy a new SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 card which I know works well with Slackware, when I talked myself into purchasing the new 24 bit 7.1, knowing that the driver is still experimental.

Okay, so I get the soundcard working....kind of! Playing MP3's with mpg123 sounds great! , so I know that the soundcard is working. However, playing MP3's with amp, there's a lot of crackling and popping. No big deal, Ill use mpg123

But, I cant play CD's! I pop a CD in, and whatever cd player I use, reads the cd fine and it plays, but....No sound!

Anybody have experience with this card and know what the issue is that is keeping me from hearing my CD's while I can play MP3's just fine?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Slackware 10.1

That depends if you connected the cable that goes from the cd-rom to the sound card. If you most cd players should work by default. If you don't try opening XMMS, goto the Preferences, and in the CD Player plugin, choose to extract audio digitally.

This is *purely* a guess as I have zero experience with that card, but do you have the little CD audio cable hooked up from the CDROM to the sound card?

hmmm....

Okay, somebody who has this card, I need some help.

First of all, I do have the audio cable hooked up between the sound card and my cd player. But, I just noticed that there are 2 cable inputs on the card. 1 is the regular 4 hole audi connector sticking straight out of the back of the card. Thats what I have hooked up. But then there is this other white input laying flat on the card, what is that input for?

Anyways, I can use xmms as suggested, and sounds fine. Also, switched to open sound and everything sounds better. But still no sound from CD player though. Doesn't make sense.

GEE-ZUS!

Let me give you some more details here, in case it helps.

I have a Lite-ON 52327S SCSI CDRW master (/dev/sr0), which the audio cable is plugged into, and the OEM CD-ROM that came with the box. Brand new SoundBlaster Live! 24bit 7.1 sound card. Audio cable plugged into the aux connection of the sound card.

Sound card is working flawlessly. CDRW works great. But I put a CD into it, it reads and plays the CD, but no sound. Does this make ANY sense whatsoever?

Okay...

I think I just figured it out. The audio cable is connected to CDRW analog out. believe I need a digital audio cable. Why didn't I catch that before? lol!

amp

On the subject of amp, anybody have any idea why amp sounds like crap (pops and skips all the way through) playing MP3's with the Soundblaster Live! 24 bit card, while mpg123 sounds great?

Sound girl to the rescue.

hello I have an SB Live24Bit same as you, yes my audio also did not work, problem?? Yes, installed a new Cable and all was well. Seems thta one cable can make a big difference. Look carefully at the wiring and it has to have the same settings as the one on the sound card,

you will have . . . . 4 lines in. 1st is Lft or Rt two Middles are Grnd thenthe 4th is red or white. Red being left, white being right. some cables if not purchased at the time of the card or drive, can cause issues. Check your cables carefully, for broken wires or lose connections.

The two Connectors on the sound card are on Analog Input from CD, the other is a special connector for something Creative has vbut has not yet released or fully developed. One other thing, suggest getting Alsa 1.0.9rc2 and installing that, as it will clear up things. Also one last note, is this a Clean new install from the DL CD's or a purchased CD set and book? If the latter then all you need to do is get the newer alsa drivers and be done with it. Also check the Mixer settings, at teh command prompt type alsamixer and make sure the audio is up for only the second line. Unless you have 2.1 4.4 or 5.1. Then select for the appropriate settings. esc out and type aslactl store and be done with it. to get teh newer alsa drivers, go here Alsa Org and get teh new ones.

extract them and then run ./sconfigure and let it run. then make and then make install. You're done and you should have very clear sound too. If you have any other problems and can't get it to work with any of these suggestions, then Iwould say the connector tothe card is broken or the one on the drive is, if the cable is nto bad. There is no reason other than this that you shoud not have sound.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definately check out those drivers you mentioned.

Okay, so I DO want the analog connection. Got it. I have been very careful, as you suggested with checking the connection, and have even tried every combination of connecting the two. So the only possible thing that it could be is a bad cable as you suggested. Or possibly the connection on the card itself (The card was shipped in an unprotected envelope. Gee, thanks a lot!)

Something you mentioned caught my attention, regarding the 4 wires. The analog cable I have is brand new. Came with the LITE-ON CDRW that I purchased. However, although it of course has the 4 standard holes in the connector itself, but only 3 wires...1 red, 1 black and 1 white, not the 4 wires you mentioned. Could this have anything to do with it?

I guess all I can do is purchase another analog audio cable as you suggested, and if it still doesn't work, then I'll have to assume that it is the connection itself on the sound card.

It's not really any big deal to me, as I basically only listen to Trance/Psy/Goa MP3's on my system, I just get obsessive when something doesn't work the way it should whether i need it or not!

Alsa Mixer setting are just as you pointed out.

Oh, and the install was from downloaded ISO's, but orignating from the purchased CD, NOT the LinuxISO one's

Anyways, thanks again for the Sound Advcie ;-)

you are very welcome. Yes the cable sounds like the culprit. Note on my oration, the alsa setup, use ./configure as the s is not a part of it. The 3 Connections cables do not always work as they say, especially with the SBLive24Bit. If you look at your "Quick Start" guide, in "what You Need" it shows several things, look carefully at the CD to Soundcard cable, 4 wires, in the Second Section it shows Optional, look carefully there, 4 wires.
