Now that I've gotten X up and running, aRts can't find my sound driver. AlsaMixer can't seem to, neither. I used alsaconf to set up the emu10k1 driver, then rebooted, and then started up X. It complained that no sound card could be found.
What kind of sound card do you have? Specifically, so... emu10k1 is used for some SoundBlaster Live! cards. Others with the same name use ca0106. Just as an example....

Which Soundblaster live? Is it 24-bit, or one of the older ones?
If it's a Live! 24-bit, your problem is that the sound card uses the ca0106 chipset, not the emu10k1. You might also have a problem if you're using an older ALSA. Anything before 1.0.9rc3 does not have full support for ca0106, and gives very poor sound output when not using OSS.

I didn't have a problem with the OSS emu10k1 driver in FreeBSD or the ALSA emu10k1 in Fedora Core 3.
