I think that's a Slackware 1 working image: fun!

Just downloaded it, but haven't run it yet. Have to work out this minor problem, from the README:
Quote:
The number of available keymaps is pretty limited, see
/usr/lib/keytables. Default is us. If that troubles you use the
getty at the serial line to login.
This is strange:
Quote:
There is no /sbin. System binaries are in /etc.

Good luck getting support with that

Anybody know where to get a 300 baud modem emulator, to add authenticity to the download?

According to /inst/install/a1/change.log
Wed Aug 4 02:25:37 PDT 1993
Release of Slackware version 1.01

There is at least one hack for qemu (in /conf/net/rc.inet1)

300 baud? Hmm... Circa 1981 I led a logistic project that needed to link roughly 30 remote terminals to a Mini 6 and IIRC on the installed or rented dedicated phone lines, we could communicate @ 1200 baud.

Old skool
Can't quite remember whose ur-Lennarts invented /sbin -- Sun or OSF at a guess?

Even now, there is still *one* of them hanging on for grim death:
Code:
multiverse$ ls -l /etc/rmt
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Apr 21  2013 /etc/rmt -> /usr/libexec/rmt
multiverse$
I *think* that tar-1.13 potentially would still use that for remote access?

Unfortunately (and I could still kick myself for it), I didn't realise how interesting messing about with computers could be 'til about 2003. And only "discovered" Linux in 2004. So I missed out on all the "Old Skool" stuff. /sbin(system bin?) seems to me a more logical place for executables than /etc.

If I am not mistaken /sbin means super user binaries

EDIT:

Quote:
A particular eccentricity of the Linux filesystem hierarchy is that originally /sbin binaries were kept in /etc.

Deciding what things go into "sbin" directories is simple: if a normal
(not a system administrator) user will ever run it directly, then it
must be placed in one of the "bin" directories. Ordinary users should
not have to place any of the sbin directories in their path.
More here
