I don't see any harm in a few off-topic comments in threads.
Of course YOU would say that, Brian, wouldn't you? Being guilty of that grievous sin!
As an ancient Oldham philosopher said: "A mind that does not wander never gets anywhere."

So desktop users shouldn't benefit from what those dependencies do offer those packages? Pat should compile a system using the lowest common denominator? How do you decide what the lowest common denominator is?

If you don't run a full system, then that's a choice one is willingly making and that may result in broken packages that might require recompiling or tracking down those dependencies.

My reason for asking is that I was curious as to what triggered your post. From what I see, posts related to Slackware derivatives are not a common occurrence in this part of the forum.

Yeah that's the first time I think I've spoken publicly about that. I accepted my reprimand.

Agreed. I enjoyed the opportunity to voice my opinion.

Yeah, slamd64 was OK as the forerunner of Slackware64. Ages ago I ran Zenwalk for quite a while. Think my first question on LQ was about it. I've tried Salix, too. Both good, but I'm a maximalist - so I settled for Slackware itself.

Never is too late to hijack a thread, you known...

Anyway, your idea would be way more interesting than the original subject.

A stickied thread perhaps, where we can discuss the merits of derivatives - what is their unique value that justifies their existence, and should Slackware absorb some of these unique and valuable features?
But also to point out the differences with the mother (Slackware) that make it impossible to support these derivatives here in the Slackware forum.

Some derivatives can influence their parent distro. I'm sure Ubuntu has influenced Debian. Whether it's a good thing or bad? I'm inclined to think bad.

Agreed. I've never tried any of them, but I would be interested to hear which ones people use and why. Because of this thread, I went and poked around a few of their websites.

No reason to be sorry, hitest, everyone is entitled to one's opinion and to express it, as far as I am in concern. Have a good day.

No, you didn't. Stop worrying about it. What does not kill you makes you stronger - as a crazy German once said.
