I've downloaded many distros via ftp on my 56k, and even though it takes forever, and resumed numerous times, I've rarely had any problems. I downloaded using Windows and CuteFTP and so far (knock on wood :lol no MD5SUM errors

BitTorrent is out of the question for me, since it's too slow for us dialup users.

Question checksum - slackware

Md5 sums all wrong. Are slackware downloads in a different format eg crc, sh1 etc.

It states "checksum", not "md5 checksum" in the slackware download section of linuxquestions.org so I suspect they may not be md5's.
