Slackware 14.2, New install or upgrade?

I am considering a full system upgrade from 14.1 to 14.2. I could do a new install as all my relevant data is backed up on a separate HD.
However, I have multi-OS booted on this machine and installing one
with Lilo, messes my Grub bootloader.
Anyone know what the size of the download is for a 14.2 upgrade?
And how long it would take (approx.)

Afterthought, is 14.2 available with Grub?

Yes, Slackware includes Grub. I believe it may become, if it's not already, the default, as LILO seems to have stalled, but I'm not certain about that. http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/

http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:sla..._first_install

My suggestion would be not to install a bootloader when you install Slackware if you already have Grub installed and working. Instead, add Slackware in your current Grub bootloader after you complete the install.
I think running update-grub would likely do that, but I'm not a grub expert by any means.

Thank you for the links. Although I like Lilo as a bootloader for a single system or in a dual-boot setup, I have never been able to use it in a multi-boot situation.
Whereas Grub handles the multi-boot function very well.

I believe you are right about running 'up-date grub' assuming I am still able to boot a system that has grub, in my case, Debian.
However the scond link, looks promising.

So far, lilo is still the default bootloader unless you boot off UEFI-forced hardware, it will use elilo. While grub is included, it isn't default in any installation.

I've used the following slackdoc to successfully set-up grub on Slackware after the install was completed. It might be useful for someone looking at setting up grub.

I've provided a grub2 script that matches how slackware works (versus how debian works) on this forum more than once. If you can't find it here, go to GitHub https://github.com/Richard-Cranium/SlackwareGrub2

It probably would be very helpful it that would get a mention or a link on the Slackdocs page on setting up grub.

Upon checking the Slackware 14.2 iso download, I see it is 2.6 GB. This is a lot for my
limited internet connection but probably doable.
Reading the instructions on the upgrade here.
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...nt/UPGRADE.TXT

This is also straightforward, but no size is mentioned as to the actual download.
Is anyone familiar with what that might be?
Still puzzling over which route to take.

You just need the packages directory; whatever option you take it'll be a fair old size.

The update is actually very straightforward, just follow the instructions; I wouldn't go through the hassle of a reinstall. If you're concerned about bandwith, maybe the physical media is your best option?

There is no reason Lilo would make any changes or affect your Grub bootloader on another system or in the MBR. During the installation, you will have the options to install Lilo to the MBR, the superblock of the partition on which you install Slackware or not to install it at all. These options are available if you use the expert option of installing Lilo. I expect you are selecting the "install Lilo automatically" option. Details on installing Lilo are at the link below.

I'm always curious about references to lilo having stalled. It is so utterly simple and effective what is there to improve?
