Just thought I would update those curious about this issue. The issue was in fact resolved by downloading the source for Wicd 1.6.2.2 and using the Slackbuild script for Wicd 1.6.2.1 (all I had to do was modify the Slacbuild script for the correct version and architecture). I am finally able to connect to WPA-encrypted wireless networks, though I've yet to test those that are hidden and WPA/WPA2 protected. I expect there to be no problems from here in, but I'll update if necessary.
