I am not sure what it is for...so that the dial tone will play on your speakers perhaps, or for telephony?

Anyway, if you don't need it I'd say the best thing to do is just to blacklist the module as you have done.

If you want it for something, maybe editing modules.conf and making sure that the proper alias lines are there to make sure your real sound card is card0. Or, I think there is a way to select the default sound card using your ~/.asoundrc file if you can't get the aliases working.

(2) Since this module take the first slot in ALSA (card0) and puts my real audio card into the second (card1), are do we set by default the second card instead of the first one. (ALSA)

are you asking what to do ?
tipaul spelled it out perfectly. "just insert the line snd-intel8x0m at the end of the file: /etc/hotplug/blacklist..."

which, by the way, i was just posting to say that i just installed slack 10.0 on a dell c610 laptop, and the above instruction worked to get my sound working.
thanks !!!

Blacklisting the snd-intel8x0m works on my NEC Versa too, but as the Si3036 modem DAA really is an AC97 device, the problem is that it should be possible to tell the sound system to use card1.
/etc/asound.state has no reference to card number, /proc/audio has some symlinks pointing at card1
I have seen reports here by desktop users with two soundcards, who are having similar problems
