Slack9 - no PPP (can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.18/modules.dep)

I just updated my Slackware to the latest 9.0 distro and am having no problems with it. A friend of mine who has been Linux envious for some time decided to give it a go and installed a fresh install of Slackware 9. He had a little problems with his Nvidia card, but nothing major... so he is now up and running and may turn into another satisfied Linux convert.... except one major problem. He can not get PPP to work.

I can not look at his setup as he is located remotely - but I am rather experienced with Slack so I have been helping him troubleshoot. His modem is definitely recognized, he is using KDE and KPPP (dialer app) has picked up on the mode and is ready to roll.... after doing some trouble shooting on his own he has come to the conclusion that PPP is not being loaded. So I told him that?s a simple thing to solve - just enable the module in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules... which is what he did... and now he is getting this error msg:

...now modprobe says it can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.18/modules.dep (no such file)

... so are these libs no longer being installed by default in Slack... and whats the solution to getting his PPP rolling.

- thx

There is something wrong with his install. There appears to be some mixed up files if he is running Slack 9. The error messages indicates kernel 2.4.18 and Slack comes with 2.4.20.

I would only think it would be looking for 2.4.18 if he is running a 2.4.18 kernel. Slack 9 would not of installed the modules for that kernel. If he looks there should be a /lib/modules/2.4.20 tree that would be used with a 2.4.20 kernel.

Once the kernel issue is resolved, then the modules should load properly.
