Slack booting issue (Video mode Not supported)

Well i was able to get slack 9.1 installed but i ran into a problem after restarting i wasn't able to get a video mode that is supported so is there a command i can use to bypass the lilo bootloader? And correct my problem in Xfree?

I don't know the proper commands to do this so you'll have to dig. You change the video mode in the /etc/lilo.conf . Mine looks like this:

# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769

So I'm useing VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256. In other words vga 773.

Basicly you need to use your boot disk and mount the hard drive to edit the file. After that run lilo and you should be good to go. Search the net for how to mount from the boot disk.

If I'm telling this wrong someone let me know.

Well this is the thing i made a bootdisk from the CD using the rawrite app and the bare.i file but when i boot what command is really needed to access the files that are already there seeing how i am having this video mode not supported issue? Should it be
[code]
boot: mount root=/etc/lilo.conf

or

boot: mount /etc/lilo.conf

I assume you would mount the drive first like mount /dev/hda2 then pico /etc/lilo.conf but I'm not real sure about the proper way to mount it as root permissions and whatnot.

I think you can pass 'vga=ask' or 'vga=normal' so it'd be something like 'root=/dev/foo vga=ask' I guess. Then you can reset it and get around the issue with a normal 80x25 screen, in which you can 'editor lilo.conf'. Mounting's not an issue for the boot-prompt, afaik.

Similar problem

Atomic has it right. I had a similar problem after I recompiled my kernel the screen would not show up. When I got to the boot line I used

boot: mount root=/dev/hda2 *change hda2 as appropriate

then you can open lilo.conf and play with the vga settings. Fortunately for me there was the vga = ask option. Things are big but at least I can see when it boots now.

Good Luck
