I have the problem that I can hear the mic in the earphones connected to the same AC97 board, but when I try to record or send over Skype, nothing that I hear in the headphones gets transmitted. This would imply that the soundboard and the motherboard are not communicating, despite the fact that they are one piece. Any ideas?

If you have some plugs at the front of your computer case open your box and see if the cables are connected correctly.

Ah well, this was my very same problem today (for a week in fact), after a new linux install (hard drive failed, so...). So, in case you cannot record sound, try to choose the right mic through "mic sel" in alsamixer

Debian (old) installer (I had an old CD) chose to use mic2 instead of mic1 which was the right one.

However I get CD audio playing mono, and CD drive isn't connected to the motherboard any other way than with IDE wire...
