Running CUPS by default necessary to print?

I've been running Slackware 13.37 since RC1 (so I'm a relatively new Slacker!).

I set up CUPS to start as a default service during my install process. I print once in a while, but my computer is not a print-server per se. Do I have to have it auto-started in order to just be able to print on-demand (like, from LibreOffice or Okular)?

Thanks.

It has been a long time since I've done a fresh install, but off the top of my head, the answer would be, yes.
You have to set up a printer and the best way to do that is by using CUPS, i.e., http://locahhost:631 in a browser.
So, yes, you would set up CUPS as a default service during the install process. I'm sure someone with speak up if I'm wrong.

I would just leave the CUPS service running at start-up as that will be more convenient for you. Yes. CUPS needs to be running for you to print. If you forgot to start CUPS during the install process you can do that from the command line:

chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups
/etc/rc.d/rc.cups start

If you want to stop CUPS from running you would issue this command:

/etc/rc.d/rc.cups stop

Alien Bob has an excellent CUPS tutorial:
