Recompile kernel with .config?

I've built a custom kernel with 3.10.18. If I wanted to move to 3.10.24 can I just copy over the .config from it? Is that how it works? What do I have to do to not have to renter all my kernel selections in make menuconfig again.

You could copy the running kernel config then run
Code:
make oldconfig
make oldconfig should use the config you provide then prompt for any new items if I understand it correctly.

If you didn't save you running kernel config, do this:
Code:
zcat /proc/config.gz > /path/to/your/new/kernel/root/directory/.config

I would suggest running lspci against the stock kernel to see which hardware you have first.

After you document an note the hardware you have, run defconfig to setup a basic system architecture kernel with minimal hardware support for common systems, then use menuconfig and enable modules for your hardware. Make sure you also build-in the drivers for your file system(s), rather than use modules, and double check that:

Code:
Device Drivers  --->
  Generic Driver Options  --->
     Maintain a devtmpfs filesystem to mount at /dev
is enabled. You should also check again other commonly used hardware such as printers, network file systems, etc. The Beyond Linux From Scratch book lists several you might want to enable, and they carry well in to Slackware.
