realtime audio: is there a patch for bash, or is PAM the only way atm.

hi there,

since the 2.6.12 kernel, it's possible to get realtime priority as user
without patching the kernel.
to use this, there's atm. only a patch for PAM ( that i know of ).

see:

http://lwn.net/Articles/134460/

and

http://www.steamballoon.com/wiki/Rlimits

now as Slackware doesn't use PAM, i would rather patch bash to have
" ulimit " options to give such priorities.

does anyone know if such a patch for bash exists at all ?
and if not, what could be the consequences of installing
a patched PAM on Slackware.

any thoughts are welcome.

I use agnula-demudi for audio work (a debian based distro ..http://www.agnula.org/) it comes with something called LSM ( linux security module ) which is indeed a realtime patch. it has to be configured to apply realtime prioritys to group 21 (audio) somehow. I managed to get it to work with ubuntu too at one point but I cant remember how?? It is preconfigured in agnula tho..
http://lsm.immunix.org/
that's probably a good place to start

thanks for the link, but that gives only kernel-patches. ( and also not for 2.6.x kernels )
i currently use the lsm-module from : http://www.joq.us/realtime/

with newer kernels ( >2.6.12 ) it's also possible to get rt-priority
for user prog's without the need of that module,
but you need a patched PAM to use it. ( and Slackware has no PAM ).

so a patch for bash to set those priorities would be nice, but i couldn't find one.
guess i'll just have to wait, i can live with that module.
