I have downloaded the enw kernel, it surprises me that it is only 760KB, its size is so small. And the file name is patch-2.6.1.bz2.
How should I deal with this file? Where should I put it into?
Thanks for help.
Thanks for telling me that. I am dowloading the full sources now.
The file name is linux-2.6.1.tar.bz2, so after downloading it and untar it, where should I put the files, in which folder?
I just know the instructions of these:
edit lilo.conf file
edit Makefile file
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make
make install
make modules
make modules_install
however, before those steps, what else I need to do?
in your home folder is fine. I also add a sub-folder to /boot and edit the Makefile in the source directory --> look for #export INSTALL_PATH=/boot
uncomment it and change it to whatever sub-folder I've made. For instance:
export INSTALL_PATH=/boot/261
Just cd into the source directory, and do this:
make mrproper
make menuconfig
(after finished setting it up...)
make
(now su to root)
make modules_install
make install
This way is much easier. Also check the post by DaOne in the Slackware forum for a great guide. (see moger's post below...thanks moger!)
best of luck.
