Quake 3 no sound, glxgears seems slow, should I use the 2.6.7 Kernel?
Okay after a brief departure from Linux, I decided to build a box and dedicate it solely to the work of art known as slackware. I used Slackware 9.1 for quite some time and have now upgraded to 10. However I've ran across some issues that were not present when I used 9.1. For instance I have now sound when I run Quake 3. I've set all the permissions for /dev/dsp and for the Q3 files. Before when I would run Q3 I got a message like "could not mmap /dev/dsp" (something to that effect). After changing the permissions my console now says that the sound is muted, when I open my Volume control nothing is muted. What could be the problem.

I have a NVidia GeForce FX5200 with 128 MB VRAM, when I run GLXGears I get somewhere around 1150 fps does this seem slow?? The gears do not seem to be spinning very fast and I'm wondering if I haven't loaded something properly or if this card is just that slow! when I loaded the NVidia Driver I got some warning about a 'rivafb' driver BTW I am using the NVidia 6106 driver.
Last Topic: Kernel 2.6.7
Should I use this, would this solve my problems with sound? judging by my list of hardware would there be any conflicts with my system and this kernel?
I would say your sound problems are either to do with your alsa mixer settings, or with your hardware. If you know your sound hardware has worked ok with other linux kernels it should work OK with 2.6.7. Are you sure you have the right module compiled into the kernel under ALSA settings? Have a look at the ALSA documentation.
I just ran glxgears (on 2.6.7) and get
16743 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3348.600 FPS
with a nvidia ti 4200, so yes it would appear your 5200 is running a bit slow.
2.6.7 seems to run fine for me both with sound and graphics.. you just need to tweak it a bit!

I'll take a look at that and see what I get, I'm at work right now. It's a Soundblaster Live, and I know it has worked in the past. Currently I have sound when I play mp3's and for other apps I just get no sound when I run Q3.
The TI Series of GF4's is a lot better than the FX5200 but I should have a framerate close to that of your 4200, but still lower.
When you say tweak it a bit, I assume you mean recompile it. I've never successfully compiled my own Kernel, but that's why I have my own Linux Box so I can try things without messing up my main PC
Also, I see you like Gentoo, have you seen the new Gentoo based distro "VidaLinux"?
Hey man i'm just wondering if youve fixed your sound problems and video problems yet? I'm facing those problems right now.
I have an AthlonXP2000 with 512mb of ram, SB Live!, and GeforceFX 5200 128mb ram..
on glxgears my score is about the same as yours: 1150.
I have no sound in Quake, and Quake lags, even on the very first map against Crash.
I had a Geforce4 MX before this card and it ran faster than this 5200 and that was on Windows too. I too experienced the same lag in Windows as I do now in Linux with Quake with this new card so maybe its just the card itself?
