When I start up Quake3 I get this error with the starting of the sound services...
------- sound initialization -------
Could not mmap dma buffer PROT_WRITE|PROT_READ
trying mmap PROT_WRITE (with associated better compatibility / less performance code)
/dev/dsp: Input/output error
Could not mmap /dev/dsp
------------------------------------
I did a chmod 666 /dev/dsp, but to no prevail. Anyone know why this is happening. All my other games, and apps with sound work just fine. I use alsa, I increase PCM. I have Slackeware 10, and this happened with every distro that I tried with this computer, I did plenty. The sound is an AC '97 VIA tech onboard sound. Using the 2.6.7 kernel. GeForce FX 5500.
nvmd. After the first single player map, it locks up, and the sounds keeps repeating, even after a logout, and a logback in. I have to fully reboot it for it to get back to normal. I do not recommend this.
also the same problem here
and i tried step 2 & 3
and the sound works fine in the menu of the game but as soon as i start to play it hangs and the sound keep repeating itself and i had to kill Xfree
any new tip here plz ?
and ow can i remove what he step 2 & 3 have done, i need to play the game again evn if witout sound
Man. Theres got to be a work around. Besides, im sure everyone isnt expierencing this problem... or did the linux community just lived with it?
--EDIT--
Apparently, if you have a VIA chipset computer, with an AC'97 codec sound card (or onboard) then you'll need to get the latest drivers, and compile them into your kernel. I couldn't do it, because the make file gave out (surprise) an error. Nothing new about that. Go here to get it... http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/g...-1.1.15.tar.gz
