Problems with display and pcmcia card after upgrading to kernel 2.6.15
Hello everyone, I just upgraded the kernel in my computer, I'm running Slackware 10.2 and I compiled the kernel 2.6.15, everything went all right, the only problems are that when I turn the computer on I'll see LILO and I'll pick to boot the new kernel and that's when I'm not able to see anything in the display, the system loads and you can log as a root or user (without seeing anything in the screen) and then run "starx" and then the display will work, but then whole part when you load the system and the console without the Xs wont work, also when I tried to get the new kernel to recognize the pcmcia network card it wont do it, it shows that the modules pcmcia_core and pcmcia are loaded, and when you run lspci the network adapter shows as being installed, when compiling the kernel I believe I compiled all the drivers for pcmcia network adapters, and when you do a freesh install of Slackware 10.2 running the 2.4 kernel it will be detected by it's own and it will work with no problem, the network card is a PCMCIA 10/100 Ethernet Notebook Adapter 32bit (the ones brand CompUSA) and the video card is a NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV (NM2200, the display is a 13.3" TFT active matrix integrated with a maximun resolutions of 1024 x 768 / 24-bit (16.7 million colours), thank you very much in advance.
You goofed up something in the character display device section / frame buffer section (i've done the same thing, but I can't remember what this section is called). I can't remember where exactly in the kernel configuration menu it is, but I think it's by where you can type in your custom screen resolution parameters.
The problem I think is that since your video card module has not yet been loaded the screen is limited to specific resolutions etc. I've never been good at getting the customized boot screen to go and I've found it's just best to not try anything fancy in that section. I think it's under device drivers -> character devices or something. Sorry I can't remember off the top of my head.
i had the same problmen when I tried to get tux logo on the booting screen..
just make oldconfig and then make menuconfig to your other settings and select as followingDevice
Device Drivers ->
Graphics support ->[*] Support for frame buffer devices
<*> VESA VGA graphics support
Console display driver support ->[*] Video mode selection support
<*> Framebuffer Console support
I was finally able to solve the problems, as for the display you were right it was a frame buffer error, it was solved by changing the vga resolution to normal in lilo.conf, regarding the pcmcia card the problem was that I did not compile the module for the driver of the card in the new kernel, it's supposed to be an old one and the name is Tulip, that finally got the card to work. Thank you very much you all.
