After executing "startx" command I am informed that I cannot start Server because there is a problem with the dept I have choosen.
When I installed Slackware 9.0, I configured it properly choosing the right horiz/vertical monitor range, color depths, resolutions... --> 24 bits color depth, VideoMemoryCard=65, 1024*768... and all worked fine.
Then I had to compile the kernel, and then saved it, having two records in Lilo (one for the old kernel and one for the new).
My problem is when I boot using the new one all work fine, but when I use the old kernel, I receive error that I have choosen wrong depth (it doesn't support 24 bits collor depth) and if I choose 16 bit, then screen resolution is 800*600.
What would you advise me?
Every time I compile the kernel, will I face same problems?
Does this has to do with the fact that I didn't save the changes (after compiling the kernel) to a new configuration file?
1. Your old X configuration was open-ended. i.e. It allowed for looking for FrameBuffer, and didn't find it in kernel before. Hence it used something else - like AGPGart. WHen you compiled the new kernel you compiled something new into it, like DRI, or FB and replaced original modules with new ones. But it is all just a wild guess, cause you, like many others, never bothered to tell us the details...
New kernel: Version, which video-related options you chose.
Your free86.config: did you change anything after recompile? what is inside of it in terms of enabled extensions, driver set up.
well...when you start-up your old kernel, it it seems to miss a module ???
but why bother, if the new kernel runs fine.....
( always save your .config-file , use it when you make adjustments on a kernel )
ok, suppose that I decide to save .config file. Where is this file? What should I fo, rename it? And if again something goes wrong, what steps should I follow?
Thank you
