problem when I run startx

Have just installed slackware 9.1 the install was trouble free chose the "full install " as this is first slackware experience. after rebooting and logging on I tried startx wich gave me a screen of thin red, blue and green vertical lines and had to reset pc. Using my win2k box I went to..

http://www.slackware.com/config/x.php

and tried to run : /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup but got an error msg directory does not exist

then ran: /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config and proceeded until the monitor refresh rates at this point I followed the on screen suggestion and did a ctrl-c and looked up the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/Monitors to see if my monitor was there and what the refresh rate should be, however in the doc directory there is neither file or directory call Monitors

since my post I have gotten the relevant data and entered it into xf86config without it making a difference. This box has previously run rh9.0, suse8.2 and rh8.0 so its unlikely that it is a h/ware issue.

compaq deskpro EN 600mhz i815 chip with integrated graphics
128mb sdr ram
Monitor 17" compaq S700

Search the web for your monitor's horizontal and vertical syncs, also try with a resolution like 800x600 at first.

Thanks for the reply but as I mentioned in my original post I have already done that.

"since my post I have gotten the relevant data and entered it into xf86config without it making a difference. This box has previously run rh9.0, suse8.2 and rh8.0 so its unlikely that it is a h/ware issue."

Use this command:

XFree86 -configure

follow the direction to test the file generated. If it works, do:

mv /root/XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config

then edit the new file using and editor. Assuming you use vi, then:

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config

Now, change the following parts:
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "Mouse0"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "wsmouse"
	Option "Device" "/dev/wsmouse"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	DisplaySize 320 240	# mm
	Identifier "Monitor0"
	VendorName "SAM"
	ModelName "SyncMaster"
	Option "DPMS"
        HorizSync 30-70
        VertRefresh 50-160
Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device "Card0"
	Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 1
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 4
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 8
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 15
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 16
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 24
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
Note: change the HorizSync & VertRefresh with your specifics. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, That worked although I had to do it a couple of times. The first time I tested it nothing happened just a lot of text on the screen, the second time it loaded with cursor but no wmanager so did mv and rebooted and startx and everything ok and xterm on screen

thanks again
