i can't get my printer to work ... I've tried searching and at limuxprinting.org ... i've configured cups with localhost and installed the appriate driver(hpiji1.7.1) ... and it does print the test page but with any other app it won't print ... a pop up with title "printing" comes up then in the progress line it says preparing... then the pop up goes away and nothing happens ... any clues would be appreciated

So, you've told us the problem with your printer, you've also gave us some specs of your machine.. But you still didn't tell us what printer brand and model you have so that we may have a basis or a start for our replies..
This is just a guess based on the info given, but I've had a smiliar sounding curcimstance
at one time. It had to do with the printer setup in the particular program I was printing
from.
Example:
In Mozilla, the printer setup was " lpr ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+'-P'}${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME} "
But when I switched it too " kprinter ", it worked.
But without knowing more specifics like desktop manager, program(s) and as xushi
mentioned, model of printer, I personally can't be of more help.
