greetings forum,
i am trying to obtain video [dvd] capabilities to a recent 12.0 install. i see xine and gxine are installed to which i added libdvdcss-1.2.9-i486-1kjz.tgz. i expect win32 codecs is also required. i have done a google search with no luck for slackware 12 win32. any idea where i can acquire win32 and are there any other packages needed by xine.
you don't need the win32codecs for DVD playback. As long as you have xine awnd libdvdcss installed, you should be able to watch encryptded DVD's (BluRay and HD-DVD are a different story). The win32codecs are for stuff like quicktime, wma's and wmv's. There is a slackbuild for them available at slackbuilds.org. If you are unfamiliar with slackbuilds , read the FAQ and HOWTO there.
i just tried a dvd via gxine. the startup wizard listed 3 red lights, cdrom and dvd [permissions not sufficient] and dma on dvd drive. so i expect i need to add to the user file.
regarding slackbuild i saw a package over there called mplayer codecs is that the same as win32.
Dont know why gxine is worried about permissions, you don't need to mount a dvd to play it. Anyway, add yourself to the "cdrom" group if you are not part of it already and HAL should take care of that.
The mplayer codecs are the win32 codecs, they are known as that because the MPlayer Project provides them. MPlayer is an excellent media player and encoder, with an great depth of features.
i got the permissions for gxine setup so that gxine opens and presents the wizard which i setup. when i put in a dvd and click file>dvd the dvd opens but locks up on the fbi warning and i get the terminate window.
when next i open gxine i still get presented with the setup wizard. i am not sure if this is normal since this is my first experience with gxine video player. any ideas as to the lockup problem.
Have you had any luck with this? I can't get DVDs to play on my Slackware install either. I went to http://www.slackbuilds.org and got libdvdcss, libdvdread, and libdvdplay and installed them, but when I open gxine and select DVD, I get this message:
Quote:
The xine engine failed to start.
No input plugin was found.
Maybe the file does not exist or cannot be
accessed, or there is an error in the URL.
I can mount DVDs and access data on them, it's just trying to play videos that I have problems with.
