Trouble with ABIT KD7 on-board sound

I'm running Slackware 9 on an AMD desktop. The mainboard is an ABIT KD7 w/ on-board 6-channel AC 97 CODEC sound.

when I start X Windows I get the following error;

"Mixer device /dev/mixer has neither volume nor PCM channels"

The trouble shooting and common problems pages found in "O'Reilly - Running Linux/Configuring and Using Linux Audio" do not touch on this.

This is My first Linux installation, I could use some help configuring the sound.

Thanks, D

You may need to load some kernel module to enable your on board sound chip.

Try:

$ lspci

To verify a multimedia chip is exist in the system (not disable/faulty).

After look for the corresponding kernel module and modprobe it. Should make it in the /etc/rc.modules so it can always be activate whenever boot. By the way, did you install hotplug?? If you have installed, it should be able to automatically detect the chip and load the corresponding module.

I find this hotplug very handy. I even changed (in some of my machine) to run hotplug before rc.modules. Only use rc.modules for specify device that hotplug does not load it correctly.

Hope this help...

Oh ya... The command above should only be executed under root user...
