How did you install the nvidia driver? Do you mean the one from the Nvidia web site?

Richard,

Yes the one from the nvidia website.
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.36.run

As per some suggestions I black listed the following to get the nvidia driver working properly.

blacklist drm
blacklist ttm
blacklist nouveau

Is it ok to black list drm and ttm? I just think the only one I need to black list is nouveau..

Interesting. I don't have any of those blacklisted.

I have 2 GeForce 9800 GT cards in SLI mode. I do specify the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

GF 9800 GT SLI KDE Won't Boot; Kubuntu 11.04

Richard (or any other helpful soul);

I would love to see your config file (if you still have one) and which NV driver you're using for your two 9800 GTs.

I just installed my 2nd 9800 GT card and KDE will not boot. I get a small x window telling me the config file failed to load. The xorg.conf file was deprecated in Kubuntu 11.04 so I don't have an xorg.conf file per se. Of the config files I do have, they are all quite generic so I don't know what my system is using for graphics.

I'm using nvidia driver version 270.41.06.

I have a Dell2407WFP monitor.

I can bring up the NVIDIA X Server Settings window and everything looks like it should (monitor, version, OS, etc.).

Please advise.

I'll live up to my handle after answering your question.

First, my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf file contents:
Code:
Section "Module"
    Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "SWCursor" "on"
    Option "HWCursor" "off"
    Option "SLI" "yes"
    Option "metamodes" "1600x1200 +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Option "DynamicTwinView" "true"
        Depth 24
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
          Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
(I'll admit that there are some things in that file which should be pulled out, but I was lazy at the time. Still am, actually.)

I'm currently running the 290.10 Nvidia proprietary driver. I'm also running a pure 64 bit version of the Linux kernel (kernel 2.6.37.6). You should probably remove the metamodes line in your copy.

You should also examine your Xorg logs, which should be wherever the *bleep* Kubuntu writes them. One would hope that would be /var/log/Xorg.0.log; in any event, you should be able to see what decisions your driver made while initializing.

I hope that helps.

However:
  1. It is rather bad form to hijack someone else's problem to ask about yours. Especially when you change the subject line.
  2. It is also rather bad form to ask Kubuntu questions on the Slackware forum. Please ask your questions over there, where there are undoubtedly a group of knowledgeable and friendly people just waiting for someone to ask for help.
