no cdrom, tried bare.i method, armada 7400 266 128mb ram

slack 9.1 and it gets a boot error after displaying the copyright info when it boots with the bare.i disk in it. I'm using the xp write util. Why is this happeneing? I have a small 15mb spartition for compaq utils that comes on the computer, and a 2kpro partition, and i have 4 gb I would like to put slack on but I have no cdrom. I have pcmcia ethernet with a 3com card , also my roommate has a usb external sony supressa cdrom but I doubt there is an image for that.
